History of The Mount
The Mount is thought to have been built around 1830 although the exact details are not known. The architect who designed the building was called William Flockton. Flockton also designed several other landmarks in Sheffield between the years of 1830 and 1858, many of which are churches now protected from demolition.
The first residents of The Mount include James Montgomery who was a successful British editor and poet. His works were widely read throughout Britain and America, and he was a close friend of William Wordsworth.
In 1875 John Walsh founded the John Walsh Ltd Department Store in Sheffield which sold everything from silk to furniture. During the Sheffield Blitz in World War II, John Walsh's city centre store was destroyed in an air raid and another store was set up temporarily at The Mount.
Grounds
At the front of The Mount is a pleasant garden which was once used as a bowling green. There is a car park for staff and student use.
Nearby are many shops and fashionable cafés, five minutes walk from the centre. There are also a number of pubs in the area which help make Broomhill one of the most friendly and lively places in Sheffield.
Ground Floor
A+ English moved to The Mount in 2009. Students are welcomed in the scenic reception hall, with its grand staircase and vintage chandelier.
The teachers' room is another large room full of classic features, like the fireplace and large windows. There is also a waiting room for our visitors' convenience.
First Floor
There are 15 spacious and well-equipped classrooms on the ground and first floors.
Second Floor
On the top floor is our large common room, where students can meet new people and friends. They can play pool, grab a drink or just relax.
There is also a ladies' lounge so that our female students can enjoy some privacy.
We have a large library and study centre with ten computers where students can access Facebook and other sites.
